Coal India Limited (CIL) is a state-owned coal mining corporation established in November 1975, operating as the world's largest coal producer with 80% of India's domestic coal output. It manages 14 subsidiaries including Eastern Coalfields, Bharat Coking Coal, and Mahanadi Coalfields, plus direct control of North Eastern Coalfields in Assam. CIL contributes 55% to India's power generation and 40% of primary commercial energy needs, running Asia's largest opencast mine at Gevra. The company employs over 220,000 people as of April 2025 and supports initiatives like non-conventional energy through subsidiaries. All subsidiaries reported production growth, with Mahanadi Coalfields exceeding 200 MT.
